As an avid hosteller and backpacker who's stayed in all sorts of places all around the world, I can unequivocally say Amigo in Taipei was the WORST place I've ever stayed in my life. Let me explain why without any hyperbole:
1. Filthy. Sheets weren't clean (you could see the dirt), bathrooms were disgusting and smoking was allowed inside.
2. Loud. No quiet times meant drunk tourists were up all night talking and playing loud music. The walls of each room don't go all the way to the ceiling, so the place is like one big room.
3. Uncomfortable. No mattresses, just a thick blanket on a wooden plank.
4. Dishonest staff. We made a reservation online for New Years Eve, only to find out the owner booked another person in our spot. He had all of our paperwork, but said the only thing he could do was give us a room in the dorm. Didn't even apologize.
5. Expensive. If your one that's willing to save on comfort to save a dime like me, this still isn't your place. Other hostels in Taipei are actually decent and cost less.
My friend and I left at 2:00 in the morning on the second night there because we couldn't get any sleep (the loud music). We decided spending the night sleeping at the airport was better than staying there - and it really was.
Again, I'm not at all a travel complainer. But, whatever you do, don't make the same mistake we made in choosing Amigo in Taipei.

I can't think of anything missing in the property :- friendliness, broadband internet access, small collection of books about Taiwan with Taipei map, hot water and body soap for bath, boiled water with free tea or coffee bags, a pantry if you would like to cook, common cable TV to watch movie or soccer. Will be close to perfect if they can improve the ventilation of the premise. Highly recommended for a short trip stay and my next trip to Taipei.

only one thing i can say to those of who's got a thought to stay at AMIGO HOSTEL is that "never ever try to make a booking of dormitory for 10people. it sucks... no security, no friendly staff, almost felt like being in construction site.

The staff isn't helpful and seems not to care much about clients. Things look really old and rooms could have been copied from any prison. Looks messy. I know it's cheap, but I would ask for a bit more.

The place could do a lot better with some actual cleaning of certain areas...bathroom specifically. Some easy things can also be done to prevent the bug problem...patching up all the open air flow places with filters and putting out bug killing stuff on both floors.
