One of the closest Lodges to the Waterfront, the Big Blue is a spacious (and we mean spacious) place. Thanks to its generous proportions, social and sleeping areas don't overlap so party animals ...

The Rooms are old, cold and a little bit wet!

Good character and a fun place as it was full. Not the best location but no problems at all. Friends got bitten by bed bugs but we had a great double room - big, comfy and clean.

Bed bugs EVERYWHERE. Ensuites, private rooms and dorms. STAY AWAY. They don't spray and the manager just gives you a trash bag and wishes you luck.

A number of back packers had bed bugs at this hostel. Staff were very unhelpful but apart from this this hostel was OK.

Lovely backpackers in nice old building close to waterfront. Ensuite room nicely set up with kettle for tea and coffee and a lounge. Bedroom exceptionally clean with white sheets, doona and big pillows - complimentary towels and soap. Free internet. Didn't have a friendly or social atmosphere so probably not good for single travellers or people wanting to party. However - clean, good value and good location.

The bathroom dirty, hair in the sink!

There was hair all over the floor on the sheets and in the shower drain. We had a private room with a bathroom. Otherwise it was really nice and I'd go back.

I was very disappointed in the cleanliness of this hostel, especially for the price (I booked a double with en suite). The sheets on my bed were NOT clean; I\\\'d read on similar posts that this hostel had a "mild" outbreak of bed bugs in March 2008. I was bitten repeatedly in April 2008. I checked out early and moved to another accomodation because I could not take the unclean conditions. The carpet on the floor in the rooms smelled awful, as did the toilet.

one of the members of staff we dealt with was lovely the other guy was not very helpful and a bit arrogant

Not in the best located part of Cape Town and not the fun element is pretty poor. Security of windows could be better though the entry system makes the place fairly secure. I have certainly stayed in better places before and find it hard to believe it's rated one of the best hostels in South Africa, I hate to consider what a poor hostel is like.
