Good value hostel. Its about 10 mins from the sky train which is great for getting around. Takes around 1hr to get to Khao San/ Temples (via sky train and very scenic boat trip) and its nice enough to be in an area where Thais live and not just backpackers. John was really helpful and friendly can give you plenty of advice and the staff do actually speak a bit of english and are sound enough.

John's place is about 200 meters frmo the nearest sky train station which can take you anywhere in Bangkok. This hostel is definatly for the BUDGET backpacker. You pay for what yuo get, so the fans instead of a/c and cold showers instead of hot power showers, you have to put up with. \The internet is free, though a little slow. Big John and his staff were approachable and helped where they could.

I liked the cafe/smoking area outside because i talked to people there but generally it was a quiet place and people kept themselves to themselves. The owner John was helpful recommending places to go and things to see. I think this hostel is good for the older traveller to be honest. Also not very clean and quite stuffy.

Nice enough. Friendly owner with good recommendations for things to do/places to go etc. Nice attached cafe w/ cheap beer. Hostel itself has good facilities - laundry, towels, etc., as well as big TV, free wireless internet and four PCs for general internet surfing. Rooms decent size with fans, generally good value for money. Some way from town but Skytrain only takes about 15 mins to get to the middle. Big John's also sends out invaluable instructions for getting there, whether by bus, taxi/airport etc.

It was ok to stay, but if I come back Bangkok again,I'll choose another hostel. They showed very cheap price on web site, and after I made reservation for mix dorm, they e-mailed me "the room you reserved was hammok on the roof"!Hammok is not a dorm anyway. And I got there, I paid extra fee for "true mix dorm".If I knew that before I paid deposit, I wouldn't stay there. There was many hostels which have "Mixed Dorm". Not clean, staff can't speak English(they are nice though),not stable internet connection, and building inclined to one side!

BIG JOHNNYS IS A GREAT BASIC PLACE. HOSTELS ARE NOT HOTELS AND PEOPLE NEED TO KEEP THIS IN PERSPECTIVE.IT IS VERY CENTRALLY LOCATED TO ALL!!! THEY JUST MOVED FROM NEXT DOOR, SO THERE WORKING ON SOME IMPROVING THE ARCHITECHTURE A LITTLE.IT IS VERY CLEAN,AND THE FOOD IS REALLY GOOD,I MEAN YOU GOT A DIVERSE MENU FROM THAI FOOD,TO AMERICAN,TO AUSSSIE,TO ENGLISH FOOD. SO AFTER YOU GO TO THE LOCALS ALL DAY YOU CAN COME BACK TO BIG JOHNNYS AND KICK BACK AND RELAX AS HE HAS NIGHTLY SPECIALS 7 DAYS A WEEK,PLENTY OF BEER,BANGERS,AND BURGERS,AND THEY MAKE A THAI BUFFET NIGHTLY.BIG JOHNNYS IS A FUN PLACE THE PRIVATE ROOMS ARE NICE AS WELL AS THE MIXED DORMS,I AM GOING TO SPEAK WITH HIM ABOUT GETTING BETTER MATRESSES,BUT THAN AGAIN,FOR THE BUCKS YOU CAN NOT EXPECT A SEALYS MATRESSES OR WHATEVER TOP BRANDS ARE OUT THERE. HAVE FUN!!!
