Nice, clean and tidy. No lockers in rooms however. A good 15 min walk to the town centre but the hostel provided a courtesy shuttle every hour. Free meal every night (small portion but it's free!) Breakfast was meant to be served from 7am but staff didn't get to the kitchen 'til 7am so it was at least 7.20am before you got any food - not very good if you're going on a day trip which leaves at 7.30am!
Bathroom didn't have a lock and prefer swipercard instead of keys for more security. Free meals and in-house bar is really nice.

The people at the desk during the day were very nice and helpful. However, the guy that worked reception at night was a jerk. There was a mistake with our rooms, and when we finally found him again he acted extremely annoyed that we "bothered" him with his mistake. He was unacceptably rude every time we had to deal with him. Our room had dead roaches and rat droppings, so it was not clean at all. The bar and pool area were quite nice though, but the "Beach House" is no where near the beach.

Desk staff not very organised with finances. I booked through the internet and then they tried to charge me $40 extra when I arrived. Good bar though, and the rest of the staff were pretty friendly.

stay somewhere else in town... this place shuts at 10pm...everything.... if u cant sleep or anything. ur pretty much f*cked... also the rooms air conditioning consists of two fans pushing hot air around a room...almost like your being boiled alive, as a result there are more mosqitos there than ive ever seen in my life. do yourself a favour and stay in town or at the serpent...which is equally as far out of town...other than that it was ok

The security and cleanliness of the hostel were the worst we encountered in our travels in Australia. We spent a little more to get a private double room throughout our travels, the Cairns Beach House was the only hostel which didn't allow us to lock our own door which made a big difference to our security. There were roaches regularly in our room which again was only true of this hostel. The bathroom was apallingly unclean with standing pools of water in the middle of the room. The staff were friendly and helpful however.
The "free" shuttle is only free coming to the hostel, not going back to the airport. Rooms without AC cost just as much as AC which is in no way fair. They cancelled the daily events every day that I was there. Plus, there was really no beach anywhere near the "Beach House". The staff was not very friendly either. Exception paid to the bartender who was pretty nice.

The room I stayed in wasn't locked when I got there even though there were people staying there. There was one person who it appeared had been staying there for awhile and hadn't done laundry in quite some time so the room smelled. I wouldn't stay here again and I told a friend of mine who is going to Cairns soon not to stay here.
Supposedly there is 24 hr check-in but when i arrived from Sydney at about 9am I was told that check-in was at 1pm. Also, the receptionist seemed to have problems finding my reservation even though I booked online. The shuttle bus to and from town never came (we waited over an hour) so we ended up taking alternative transportation. Some people seem to actually be living here but because of that the rooms are a bit smelly as people don't seem too concerned about doing laundry. The staff is okay but not overly friendly. I booked with this place because it was a bit cheaper than other accommodation but you do get what you pay for. And there is NO beach in Cairns. There is a lagoon but no beach. This place was so-so but I would not stay here again as I am quite sure there are better places closer to town. They did offer free storage while I went to the reef but there weren't any lockers to my knowledge.

i only recently found out that i was supposed 2 get free evening meals while staying at the beach house - i stayed 10 nights and not once was i told by the staff about the arrangements 4 this.the place is clean enough but our room didnt have air con - i stayed in december when it was 37 degrees and all we had was a large noisy industrial fan. it is far from town but the bus is fairly reliable.i stayed in a 10 bed dorm which was left unlocked most of the day due to the heat - there are no lockers available so i felt my belongings wernt all that secure.as a single female traveller i wouldn't recommend this accommodation.
