I've been backpacking for years now and believe me this place is not for you !Useless staff, you always seem to annoy them. They cannot even provide you with a shanghai or tube map that's to tell you how much it is designed for the traveller.this place is for chineses business budget traveller not international travellers.Go to the UTEL!

The internet connection provided is slow and too much expensive in comparision with internet services availables near the hostel.

the hostel is very large and impersonal. though the location is close to tourists sites, it's also in an expensive part of town where there are few cool bars or cheap food options. teh staff is not very helpful.

it's a dump really.. disorganised, expensive internet and a cat fell through the cellin when i was surfing the internet, the breakfast which is a step 25y was a slice of pig fat and a gone off egg.. i know backpackers can't be choosey, but this place can be a bit of joke!

The location is prime and in the end it's the only real reason you should choose Captain's hostel. The staff is terrible, unfriendly and sometimes just rude. It's really a shame since most other hostels in China go out of the way to help you. The cleaning staff will wake you up very early in the morning making beds and not care if everyone in the room is asleep. The bar offers great views though and the location is rather fun. So, in the end, if you want a place just for location and not for staff or prices (overpriced!) I would go with Captain's.

Very clean. Nice staff. Location was a bit too far off the beaten path for my taste, especially with only a couple of days in Shanghai. Snack bar and restaurant were a nice touch.
