the people and the location were excellent. The security was so good you had to wait for someone to let you out of the hostel because everyone was locked in. The manager was really nasty. After changing my booking even after I had a confirmation they made me move beds halfway through my stay. Everyone else at the hostel had similar problems. I would not recommend staying at crab hostel. They staff were unfriendly and unenthusiastic. We couldn't use the reception phone and there were no other hones to use and they wouldn't even call me a taxi to go to the airport because the phone was only for incoming calls. There are plenty of other places around, do not stay here, its not worth it.

The location of this hostel was great. Just a block from the beach, and right near lots of things in Ipanema, but on a quiet street so it wasn't noisy at all. The rooms had fans, but were pretty hot. Breakfast was pretty typical of other places I've been in South America (bread & jam and juice).

We stayed at the Crab Hostel for Carnival 2007. The location and other backpackers at the "Crab" made our Carnival experience awesome! BUT be warned....the staff (in particular the crabby manager) made the week uncomfortable for many of our fellow party-goers!! The hostel rules are unbelieveable!! You pay on arrival or else you are kicked out!! You cant wash your clothes, choose which bed to sleep in, swap beds!! Our greatest annoyance was that they padlocked the fridge so we could not have cold pre-drinks at the hostel! And how does one use the kitchen when you cant use the fridge????? Location and people were great BUT the manager detracted from our experience and you will find other hostels will be more friendly and accommodating!!

the staff were extremely unhelpful. there was no fridge , big no no for carnaval especially. no laundry. woman who owned it should not own a hostel, she was rude and told everyone to stop talking at 10pm. this is no joke. worst hostel ive stayed in during my 6months in south america.

The good part of this hostel are the location and the security, but the breakfast is really poor and the attention is so bad.

Breakfast is very poor. Nothing to do with traditional Brazilian breakfast, which includes fresh fruit, freshly pressed juice, cheese & ham, the possibility to make your own hot sandwich, etc. Othe lower priced hostels in Rio do offer these and more.

Although my stay at this hostel during carnival was memerable so too will be my memories of the inflexible manager and her inability to accept responsibility for activities booked through her hostel. All the other staff were fantastic.
