Price, communal shower, and location are the best attributes of this place. Otherwise it is a dump. You will be neighbors with crackheads and questionable hobos. Our room did not have hot water, the sink was clogged, and there were bugs everywhere, even in the "clean" provided towels! It is a very old ran-down smelly and dirty place. Since you need to pass through several metal doors and one person on watch I think its pretty safe. Location is really nice too if you're planning to cruise the Sergei, from USA ~ 13th Oct 2009

Very good and cheap place for backpackers in SF. Clean single private room... A bit far by feet from downtown and piers but bus line 14 - Mission is here to reach it for 2$. I enjoyed my stay. CEDRIC, from France ~ 6th Oct 2009

This hostel is great in every aspect. VERY clean, VERY secure (area is not great), VERY helpful and polite staff, good location in terms of public transportation and very worth the money. Private rooms are no less than an inexpensive hotel and great for those traveling together who want privacy. Kristina, from USA ~ 21st Aug 2009

Be careful coming here, everyone. There are people that actually live and pay rent here... And some of them are odd. It's reasonably clean, just very old. Oldest sheets and curtains ever. Also please don't expect any fun. Mission St is a relatively tough street at night, so come amply prepared. Incidentally, one of the more permanent tenants is suing the owner... An Indian gentleman who you should expect absolutely no hospitality or help from, whatsoever. Christopher, from USA ~ 19th Aug 2009

If you\'re on a budget and aren\'t too fussy then this place is a great deal. Staff were eccentric yet very helpful! Timothy, from England ~ 15th Aug 2009

El Capitan is a very good place to stay is not like a regular Hostel because is more like a Hotel, staff is always in a good mood and able to help you as a turist, you share bathroom but you have a sink inside the room, and always enough towels for your stay. The neighborhood has fruit markets in the morning, bars at weekends nights, the Bart stations are close and Muni Cable you can take it at the corner, it's a good place to stay. No blood stains, no puke, but there was the faint aroma of piss and the cum stains on blankets. But we indeed got what we payed for. Ashley, from USA ~ 27th Jul 2009
