I really wanted to get to know the people of Brazil, so I decided to stay away from the typical tourist places like Copacabana and Ipanema. This is a great location where I felt MORE safe than in Copa or Ipanema. The people are EXTREMELY friendly and helpful. You can get anywhere worth seeing by bus here ($R2.20) in Rio, and the beach is a quick 5 minute walk away.
