A must-do for anyone heading to Rio de Janeiro and up for a unique experience. Staying with a family in a Brazilian favella is unbeleivable, and yes not even Brazilians will beleive you. So instead of paying 70 reais for a favella tour at a travel agency stay there. And play pool with they guys on the corner and see the little kids dancing on the street...And it feels very safe, because they introduce you to everyone and well...They dont even lock their doors, I mean who is going to break into a favella?

At Favela Receptiva each travellor is placed is a residence´s home and you have full use of the facilities. Another family´s home is used as a home base for breakfast and to meet people. Both the manager, Eneida, and the other particpants in the homestay project are extremely kind, welcoming and helfpul. The site is a family favela of approximately 3000 people and is generally quite safe. Somewhat removed from the downtown core, it is necessary to take a bus, although this runs 24 hors per day. If you want a taste of a favela community I would definetly recommend checking this place out.

Staying in the Favela is a true Brasilian experience. You`re not in a touristy area which is always good and you get to meet with the friendly locals. This home stay accomodation is something you would never experience in a regular hostel. Good people, good stories and a great time.

This is a home stay (B&B style) with a family within a favela community in Rio. Our family was amazingly friendly and hospitable, and the staff were great. It was such a different experience staying in a favela but very rewarding and very safe unlike the favela reputation suggests. The favela is near Sao Conrado which is a nice beach and only a 10 min bus ride to Ipanema

I was told by a few people that it was dangerous to stay in this area but I had no problems whatsoever. Excellent friendly staff, cheaper food than touristy areas and near the gorgeous Sao conrado beach. The hostel also arranges various excursion from parties to forest walks. Good job Eneida!
