This is a decent place to stay with pluses and minuses. The pluses are that it is safe, quiet, free reliable wi-fi, very clean and far more comfortable than many of the other backpackers in the centre. And only ten-minute walk to the bustling Ponsonby Road. There are alternatives much closer to the city centre (this was about 20 min walk) but they are much louder and tiny ammount of space. Saying that my room here was comfortable but probably the smallest I stayed in New Zealand and quite dar Matt, from Wales ~ 2nd Nov 2011

A great place to start your new zealand travels from. not too far from the auckland airport and only a 10 min walk into the city or nearest supermarket. The hostel was very clean and friendly. the only thing i would say is that our room was right opposite the kitchen so it was very noisey and our window overlooked the patio area where people would have a drink and a smoke til the early hours of the morning, which was a bit annoying as we had an early start and was difficult to get to sleep Michael, from England ~ 6th Sep 2011

Seema is a genuinely nice person who will try her best to make things work for you, from giving you the best available bed to directions to places and stuff to do. The internet was patchy at times but speed was good when it worked. Hostel is really clean and laid back. Beds are all Sealy beds (even the bunk beds) so they are better than average. Kitchen is a tad small but we all managed! Walking is a wee bit hilly (up and down) but distance-wise it is pretty close to almost everything you need! Chiming, from Singapore ~ 13th Jul 2011

Incredibly central and walkable to almost anywhere, including CBD, K Road and Ponsonby. Manager was very friendly and helpful, told us where we were and where everything else was in relation to us. Highly recommended, would stay here again next time. Bethany, from USA ~ 24th Jun 2011

No person in charge upon arrival. Only a very poor english speaking Asian girl that does some cleaning there. Cleanliness is so/so, dorms are clean, toilets can be a bit dirty sometimes. Small kitchen. It's located in a quiet place, good for sleeping :) amalia, from Netherlands ~ 19th Jun 2011

Maybe Freemans Lodge should have gotten more than 73% percent from me... It's not a party hostel and everybody is pretty much minding his/her own business and therefore lacks a little bit of charm. But if you need a nice, clean, quiet place close to downtown, this is the place to go. If you just wanna party and don't mind living in filthy conditions, stay in one of the downtown backpackers. The Freeman Lodge was the best hostel i ever stayed. The security ist great, the beds are awsome and it has a good location, near the city. The Bus stops near the hostel and you get for 1,80NZ$ everywhere. If i ever come back, i waill stay at the freemans lodge. Dragan, from Germany ~ 10th Mar 2011
