Green Tortoise Backpackers in San Francisco, United States

The hostel can be loud, so light sleepers may want to request third floor rooms, further away from the parties in the ballroom. Very close to a lot of fun bars in North Beach, but unfortunately you have to wrestle through the strip club/douche bar crowd on Broadway.

There are parties in and around the Green Tortoise on some nights but we have great sound insulation and very comfy beds.The scene outside on Broadway is all harmless good fun aimed mainly at tourists at night and a historic district made famous by Carol Doda and the 1950's Beatniks.

If you find adult content to be something you want to stay away from then suggest on finding a different hostel. XXX stores surround this hostel. If you dont mind than this is definitely a great spot to stay.

Thankls for rating us 100%!Yes,there are some bars and clubs on this block but safety or security has never been a problem here.

I paid my deposit and I booked a room which has 6 beds in it. when i went there were 8 beds and one mattress on the floor. they gave me another key which had a kid mattress for me!! the receptionist was smiling at me when i was saying the situation. they recommended me another hostel. neither hostels.com nor the hostel paid me my deposit back/ Aykut, from Turkey ~ 13th Sep 2009

you get free dinner 3 times a week and the food is really good. if you want to, you can help out preparing the food, which is a good way to socialize. very friendly staff. but if you're looking for queer people, this is not the place.

The Green Tortoise was by far the best hostel we stayed in! I could see how a modest or less adventerous person could cringe at the nearby sex shops and gritty north beach party scene, but it thrilled us daily. The atmosphere in the GT is genuine, down to earth, and fun. They don't regulate you like other hostels; they treat you like an adult as long as you don't act like a child. Go Green Tortoise! It is one of the best hostels i've ever stayed in. amazing staff, so friendly and helpful, good free dinners and breakfasts, amazing atmosphere with parties all the times and great trips organized. Common room is perfect too, free wifi and plenty of computers free to use, and it's clean everywhere. good location too, very central, you can walk pretty much everywhere and public transportation is just outside the hostel. i'll never be staying anywhere else in SF :) Nassim, from France ~ 6th Jul 2009
