the free meals were amazing - the best food spread i've seen in any youth hostel! location isn't the best but it doesn't take you long to walk out of it. worth a visit

I gave the location a low score as the hostel was situated near a lot of strip clubs and a seedy part of town. I had to walk down a dark alleyway to get to my part of the hostel. I felt very vulnerable walking around that area as a female on my own.
We are sorry you did not feel safe at our hostel and certainly understand why. Actually, the neighborhood is quite safe despite its seedy appearance, and we do our very best to keep our guests safe. We have a very tight security system, and do not allow anyone in our building that is not a registered guest or employee. We also cooperate and communicate with the San Francisco Police Department to keep the neighborhood safe and clean. We have not known of any incidents where or guests were in any sort of danger near the hostel. Hide Owner CommentsRead Owner Comments Chantalle, from Australia ~ Jan 15 2009

The tortoise is awesome. ALl the staff was really friendly and help full. The location was great... might seem a bit seedy to some people.. but its very safe. All the people ive met here have been great. I liked it so much i extended my stay here for 4 more nights. I definetly suggest this hostel till any one headin to SF. After the first night of hangin in the International room, youll never want to leave.

This hostel is AMAZING. My bf and I have already decided that any time we're in San fran this is where we're going to stay....the free breakfast and the group activities seemed awesome (even though we didnt partake) and for $30 a person the double room we were in was so great. Decorated like your grandmother's guest room, but great. :) Seriously this hostel has got a lot of character and its one of my alltime world-favorites....the only downside for some people could be that its located on kinda

The hostel is located on the "hot" part of Broadway, near Chinatown, so you will find everything you need if you want to have "sexy times" (a lot of stores on each sides of the hostel and street).
Near Chinatown so you can find good places to eat.
Near CBD so easy access to banks.
Near Fisherman's Wharf so you can go for a walk on the port.
Great view on the CBD's towers (Trans America Pyramid for example) from the common area.
In the morning you can see the sun rising behind the towers.

We enjoyed our stay however we would've appreciated the website advising that the hostel was in the "red light district". Otherwise, all was fine. Thanks.
