The area is not as bad as many people have written. It is a 10-15 minute walk to the well-populated shopping/tourist area of Powell St and the huge shopping and entertainment centres, and of that walk only about half is in a 'shady' area. The only time the so-called street bums spoke to me was to say hello, good evening etc, I was never asked for money, and they even moved out of the way if you wanted to get by. And that's from a female walking alone after dark. Granted, it had some potential to feel threatening, but it's really not that bad if you're sensible. The hostel itself is good enough to make the effort - sturdy bunks, very clean (other than the kitchen, but that was mainly the guests' fault), generally friendly & helpful staff (except one who seems to treat all guests like they are 14 year old European students) and really pleasant communal areas with games and comfy seating.

The Hostel is very nice, the staff is very helpful, the rooms are clean, and I enjoyed my stay. The only problem I had was that the hostel was located in Tenderloin which happens to be one of the worst areas in San Francisco. If you are a lone traveler like myself, I wouldn't recommend walking to your hostel after sunset, especially if you are a woman.

wonderful staff, friendly, helpful. clean, quiet, nice breakfast. central location. one of the best hostels i've stayed in, especially in san francisco. i'd stay again for sure!

This is a great hostel. Its clean, it has great character. The staff was excellent and very helpful. However the location was not very good at all. I felt unsafe at night as soon as I stepped out of the hostel.

The linen, room and toilet all are clean and the breakfast are good also. Everything is perfect, but we saw a little mouse in our room 610 the last day of our trip. We told the staff and hope they could catch it. Although, we did enjoy the hotel very much.^_^

Hostel is nicely maintained, clean and just plain nice to stay in. Not in the best area of the city. Sometimes felt uncomfortable walking back to the hostel at darker times of the day. I was never really bothered by residents of the area though.
Hostel is very clean, housekeeping staff really take their jobs seriously.
Beautiful area of the city just north of the hostel with a lot of great looking restaurants.
