HI-Jasper in Jasper, Canada

The shuttle times to and from the hostel are not very convenient given that the last shuttle to the hostel leaves town at 4:45pm. So, unless you want to spend 2 hours hiking all the way to the hostel from town at the end of the day, you have to end your day trip short in order to get a ride back to the hostel. Hi Yakuta, Thanks for your comments and taking the time to review HI-Jasper. The shuttle bus running to the hostel in the summer is run by another company based in the town of Jasper. They run in accordance to the operating hours of the Tramway located up the road from our property so we are not in control of their hours. I can certainly ask them if they would be interested in keeping their shuttle running a bit longer next summer but ultimately it is up to them. So sorry. It is true that our internet service can be slow and unreliable at times. We only have access to a satellite connection at HI-Jasper so a lot of times the speed is dependent on the weather. Other times when the front desk is busy with checking guests in, we have to shut the guest internet access down temporarily to speed up the process. I'm very sorry again. If you ever decide to come back to HI-Jasper then ask the front desk for activities to do aside from going on the internet. We are located in a great spot for getting out of the hostel and seeing some amazing things. Just because you had to cut your day short in order to get back to the hostel does not mean you have to end your day all together! Hope the rest of your travels were wonderful. Drinking water not being available is unacceptable. The hostel was at capacity, and all of the water taps had signs saying, please boil water before use. with two small stoves, how are 100 people supposed to boil water for a day of hiking/climbing/biking/etc. There was a small 20 litre water cooler on the porch, but it was empty.

Hi Robert, We had the signage up as a precaution because the water we usually draw from the creek was contaminated. To make sure that our guests did not get sick then we were asking them to boil their water before consumption. I am sorry but that is the reality of having a hostel on the side of a mountain. Our water is now passing the weekly test so the boiling warning has been lifted. I agree that it was nearly impossible to keep up with the water demand of our active guests during this very difficult time for us. We tried to boil water for our guests and fill our 20 gallon jug but as you experienced, it was empty when you tried to fill your bottle. We do have 3 fully functional sets of 4 element stovetops in our kitchen but that wasn't enough to keep up with our thirsty guests. All that said, we do appreciate your patience while you were here. Circumstances often arise out of nowhere and we do our best to cope with it. Sometimes it is not ideal for our guests but from a staff standpoint, our guests cooperation makes the situation a lot easier to solve. Thanks again and we hope to see you in the future! Belle ambiance, située dans la nature, a 5 minutes en navette de la ville de Jasper. Il faut faire une petite épicerie en ville avant d'y aller,car sur place, il n'y a pas grand chose a manger.

room smelled bad

Hi Gil, Thanks for your feedback! Sorry you had a bad smelling room during your stay at HI-Jasper. One thing we have a problem with here is the size of our dorm rooms. We don't hide it...there are A LOT of people in there. Even though we try to put fans and air fresheners in there sometimes we just can't fully get rid of the smell. We will continue to air the room out, clean it daily, and of course encourage those hostelers with stinky feet to hang their socks outside. If you get the chance to come back in the future then perhaps a private room would suite your needs! Either way, we would certainly like to see you back. Hope the rest of your travels go well. I really liked this hostel because there was an atmosphere there, a feeling. Usually HI are so unpersonnal, anonymous. For once I felt like at home!

Hi Elise, Thanks so much for the feedback. People always tell us that they don't like the hostel much because of the location but I feel as though you understand what we are trying to do around here. Sometimes hostels are a little ways out of town...but that is what makes them unique and sometimes even more enjoyable. The staff are all really nice and take ownership in the property. They love the interaction with guests and we feed off of the vibe created between the many backpackers in our common areas! Yeah for hostelling! Come back anytime and see us. Ryan, Manager HI-Jasper

the kitchen and common area are too small to accomodate everyone staying at the hostel. also, the female dorm is right next to the common area and the walls are paper thin, so it felt like i was trying to fall asleep in a pub. also, lights were not turned out in the dorm until well after 11 p.m. all in all, i would not stay here again.

Thank you for your feedback of our hostel. You made some really great points in regards to some of the physical aspects of our facility. We do get a lot of feedback in regards to our placement of the female dormitory and I can assure you that we usually enforce the 11pm quiet rule. I am not too sure what happened while you were staying here but I will be sure to bring the importance of enforcing our rules up at the next staff meeting.
