Good location about 700m from the tourist bus stop and right by one of the bigger temples and on a cute street with a lot of tourist shops. This is a small 3 room pension run by a family and we found it to be great. Be warned that at about 8pm at night this whole area closes down and you will need to get the bus to around Ginza to eat or go out. Kyoto is a must visit destination in Japan, far more interesting than Tokyo. My highlights were the Golden Temple and renting bikes out to the monkey park.

Fantastic place. Staff speak English & are really friendly. It's only a few mins walk from Kiyomizudera - one of the best places to visit in Kyoto! I'd stay here again no problem.

Hanakiya Inn was the nicest and best place we stayed while touring Japan! Eimi, the owner is very helpful and knowledgable about Kyoto. She helped us figure out the best way to get around the city by giving us English city and bus maps as well as telling us all the best places to eat and see. We will definately stay here again when we return to Kyoto in the future!!

Eimi, the owner, was super friendly and helpful. Her two kids are adorable. We highly recommend staying here, and if we ever return to Kyoto, we would definitely stay here again.

The owner of the inn is very helpful. She provides you with English bus and sightseeing maps for the area and is very informative about Kyoto. The inn is located right accross the street from one of the large temples. Great location, great service, great experience. I will go back and stay at this inn next year.

This hostel was great- perhaps more like a B and B than a hostel. The owner was very helpful with reccommending routes, checking on flights, etc. The hostel is conveniently located near bus stops and one of the major temples in Kyoto.

Our first night in Japan was at the Hanakiya Inn and it was perfect! To immerse ourselves into Japan instead of the removed sense one gets in a prestigious hotel is just what we wanted. It was perfectly located to enjoy a beautiful area of Kyoto and avoid the crowds at the nearby temple with an early morning visit.
