Good location right opposite a travelling walkway up to the top of Hyde Park, most places in walking distance if you don't mind a 20 min walk. A few problems with checking in, even though we booked and paid the full amount 6 months in advance - we were put in separate rooms, not offered a change... Also I was supposedly already booked in when I arrived (!!) and a manager had to be called to sort this out. Took about an hour in total to check in. Needed a lick of paint but was fairly clean. This place is an absolute dump I wanted to leave the minute I checked in. Not only was my room dirty, it was uninviting as well. The private has absolutely nothing apart from the bed, not even a bedside lamp. Combined with torned walls, narrow beds and a non-functioning TV it reminds you of a cell. The corridors and rooms are filled with rather aggressive notes saying what you can't do. Creates a very bad and unfriendly atmosphere. Expect nothing, and you will still be disappointed. All in all a fine place to stay. I would put stripes on the bathroom floors though as it is so slippery and easy to fall. Also, hooks in the bathrooms and shower rooms would make it possible to have somewhere to hang your stuff while showering or washing self. Super friendly and helpful staff! I didn't like my stay at Elephant Backpackers at all! The light of the toilet has been broken, people didn't splush the toilet and the showers were dirty. You had to pay a deposit to get a plate, bowle and cutlery and had to take those things all along. Certain rules to put stuff in the fridge (only with cooler bag) and there were no spicys to use or a lot of equipment in the kitchen. Won't stay there anymore and was glad when I could leave! The kitchens were disgusting AND closed between 10PM-5AM. You'll need flip-flops for in the bathrooms if you don't want to walk in yucky stuff. When some of the other inhabitants destroyed the recreational area the staff did nothing about it. The last straw was that you had to pay $10 for an ok wifi connection. Old building with lots of character.I dug this place.It wasn't all flashy and sparkly clean like some of the new hostels around Sydney like 'Wake Up!'.I actually had friends there that wished they stayed at my place because it seemed more laid back.I like the feeling of history and there are bottleshops and food just around the corner with a 15 minute walk to Oxford (write this tip down - took me a bit to find where everything was).You can get right to the parks and down to Circular Quay by w Todd, from USA ~ 27th Nov 2011

A location in the middle of everything. The food was great. Daily deals were good. Great staff. Marco in particular is fantastic for the hostel. I wish every hostel had a guy like that.
