A rat was running around the lobby, but the hostel was generally clean apart from that!

Very nice place where to rest. Very close to all sightseeings of Shanghai (the Bund, Pudong, Nankin Rd, etc.) and well desserved by subway and bus lines. Many shops around (Kedi, alldays...). Staff very pleasant and speaking english.

A really fine, fun place with good food and a friendly atmosphere. The female staff were extremely helpful and even chatty. Their level of English was pretty good, which is very helpful as Shanghai people in general have a remarkablty low level ability at English; they don't even understand the word "Japan" spoken or written. If you don't speak Chinese, EVERYTHING must be written in Chinese (not Pinyin) for taxi drivers.
The common areas in Mingtown are large with ample wooden restaurant quality tables and chairs. The serves alcohol, beer, and individually brewed cups of coffee or Espresso at cheap prices. The pool table, big screen TV and selection of DVDs are impressive. As for the food, I found it quite above expectation. Their 30.00RMB 10" pizza was better than a 60.00RMB 10" pizza I ordered at Pizza Hut; and my friends agreed.
Do bring an alarm clock though because chances are the staff member on all-night duty won't wake up on time to wake you up because he's crashed out on one of the couches in the lounge. The four-man bunk rooms (with pine bunks) are small but clean. The mattress is a thin spring futon type; the blanket is a single comforter, and each room has a wall air conditioner with remote in Chinese only. If you are really sensitive to noise, bring ear plugs as sound travels up from below; but if that sort of thing bothers you then you shouldn't be staying in a hostel in the first place. Overall an extremely pleasurable experience and I would definitely return. I hope Sally is still there. She is such an angel!!
