My wife and I enjoyed our stay very much.

Hostal Oporto is in a perfect location - right by a major metro station, and blocks from many great museums, including the Prado. The staff was very helpful, but didn\'t really speak English. The room was very clean and safe. I would definitely stay there again!

The room was what we expected-basic but clean and value for money. The girl behind reception was very friendly and helpful. Location was good - about 5mins walk from Calle Mayor and the area and hostel felt very safe.

our room had a pervasive odor of mildew, because there was no fan or window in the bathroom. \"double\" bed was two twin beds on wheels pushed together - fine, except they had a tendency to roll apart in the middle of the night leaving my wife on the floor.

This place is a great value - centrally located but on a quiet street, at least by Madrid standards. The rooms are not entirely no-frills, having both phone and TV. En suite bathrooms are small but functional. And vegetarians take note: There's a decent all-veggie restaurant right next door. There's also a little convenience store next door too, which is, well, convenient. The bad part: Every morning between 2:30-3am, trash collectors come up the street and make as much noise as humanly possible. So unless you're the sort who could sleep through World War III, be prepared to be stirred from your slumber. Also note that the staff, friendly and helpful as they may be, don't speak a word of English. (At least none of the people I dealt with did.)
