i have stayed at numerous hostels, and this is BY FAR the worst one i have ever been to. it is very far away from anything interesting in the city. they are way overpriced. the staff is rude and unprofessional (even going to the point of telling customers to f*ck off). i observed them giving away multiple customers' reservations for no reason at all. and they try to steal your money and then proceed to blame you when you point this out. you'd be better off sleeping in the train station than staying at hotel slotania.

Hotel Slotania is a clean hotel with a decent sized, continental sort of breakfast offered free of change. The rooms are well-kept, clean and free of vermin and insects. There is an Aldi's right across the street, which was quite convenient for getting cheap drinks and snacks for the trip. The location is a bit out of the city, but several buses and trams stop right across the street that can take you directly to Centraal Station, the Dam, the Red Light District, Anne Frank's House and to the Van Gogh museum, among other destinations. The hotel says to take the tram to the "slotermeerlaan" stop, but actually, the stop you are looking for is called 'Plein 40-45'. The drawbacks to this hotel, besides being a bit out of the city, is that the staff is a bit questionable. The English man at the front counter is a bit rude and slow at providing service. The cleaning staff is friendly, but commonly barged into our room after a quick rap on the door. The hotel would greatly benefit from the purchase of hanging door tabs indicting that the room is occupied, or needing service. Overall, and especially for the price, I would recommend Hotel Slotania.

Mixed feelings on this one. The common rooms were always busy and we met a lot of great people while staying here (2 nights). The rooms sucked and were WAY too cramped, and I found one of the staff members scary, he stalked us after we tried to smoke pot in the stairwell. It can really get expensive taking the busses/trams into Amsterdam. The free breakfast was good.

We really would not recommend this place to anyone. We stayed for 1 night on our way from the US to Greece because I read a review that said it was conveniently located for getting to and from the airport- not at all true! Sure, you can get there without going to Central Station, but the bus takes an hour each way and good luck finding someone who can accurately tell you where to catch it! Also Hotel Slotania is not especially well located for getting downtown and to tourist sights. The staff was really the kicker though- absolutely horribly rude and not helpful at all (no, it wasn't just a "cultural" thing- I've spent a lot of time in Europe and I don't care about the overdone hospitality that some Americans expect. These people were terribly rude and unwilling even to advise us on local transportation. And when we were able to get "help" from them, their advice was wrong!) This might be the cheapest place you can find, but spend the few extra Euros and stay somewhere else!

Far from the centre, noisy, may have some confusion with your reservation! But yes, it's cheap...

I had a terrible stay in Hostl Slotania. From the minute I arrived, I was told two lies: 1) that there was only an elevator on the 1st floor, so had to lug my suitcase upstairs only to discover that the elevator did, indeed, start at ground 0 2) that my stay did NOT include free breakfast, which, I discovered one day later, that there was, indeed, free breakfast available but that the hotel receptionists simply lied to diminish the number of guests eating their food. The hostel wreaks of pot and cigarettes AND IT OVERBOOKED. I returned from a night at some bars at 1:30am to find someone else sleeping in my bed!!! The receptionist had to move me at 2:30am to a competely different floor than with my friends. The next day, I told the manager and asked for reimbursement for the mess. Not only did I get no money, I got yelled at¨for nothing. My advice'---don´t check into this hostel. Plus, it´s on the outskirts of Amsterdam.

The bus rides to slotania can get exspensive so buy a weekend or 2 day bus pass at the visitor center right outside of the Central station. Staff was friendly, the free breakfast sucked. But other than that I enjoyed my stay. I would give the hotel like a A-.
