Good hostel but a little expensive. It is a relative bargain for lodging in DC, but $35 per night is above the international rate for large group rooms.
Scott: Yes, DC is an expensive city, but we really try to pack in all the FREE amenities we can! Glad you thought we were a bargain, anyway! ~ Mark Schneider, General Manager HI-DC Hide Owner CommentsRead Owner Comments Scott, from USA ~ Jul 2 2009

well located, 15 min walk from white house and 20 from the mall. cheap in comparison with others, nice staff and they organize lots of walks, pizza evening, going out together, ... quite good.
my room was not that clean and expensive for what I got, but that´s dc...
would come back
Enrique: Yes, DC is an expensive city. Hotel rooms routinely cost $300 and up, but we stay below $45, year-round -- as low as $27 in the off season! But we are all glad you enjoyed your visit and our hospitality! ~ Mark Schneider, General Maanager HI-DC Hide Owner CommentsRead Owner Comments Enrique, from Spain ~ Jun 20 2009

We had a wonderful stay. Staff was friendly and helpful. Hostels *can* be noisy but with a good set of ear plugs, I heard nothing! Susie the Elevator is very slow and noisy, but the squeak could easily be repaired with three sheet metal screws and a cordless screwdriver. :-) Location is perfect! Walk to everything! Free breakfast was great and appreciated. (We saved a lot of money not having to buy McDonalds for breakfast.) Free tours were fantastic too, especially the Georgetown Pub C
Denise: Yes Suzie is slow and she makes a little noise, but we are set to have an upgrade to her doors that should speed things up a bit and quiet her down some, as well. Glad you enjoyed your stay. It would be great if you had other room lighting besides the ceiling light which was yucky. Most hostels have lamps and/or bunk reading lights to be able to read w/o disturbing others.
Cathy: You bring up a very good suggestion. We are tackling that right now. Unfortunately, we have some constraints. There are not enough power outlets to install some lamps quickly (hostellers need the plugs to recharge their electronics). We cannot simply install new power outlets due to the costs and the load on on the electrical system. That leaves battery-operated units, but used batteries are terrible for the environment (and we take our environmental impact very seriously, as the only hostel in the world to be Energy Star Certified). Our front-runner for ideas is to find LED reading lamps because they are very efficient. I think the place could use a major facelift. It's an old building, and yet it's expensive for a hostel. It only has its location going for it, honestly.
Mark: I am sorry that you did not enjoy the value that HI-DC offers. It is true that the building is old, but inside we have redone all of the common spaces and purchased all new furniture. DC is an expensive city, and we do our best to remain competitive. Some of the extras we provide include: FREE daily tours of DC's sites; group outings like FREE concerts (at the Kennedy Center, at the National Museum of Art); FREE on-site activities like music performances, Pizza Night, Pasta Night; FREE Wi-Fi; FREE games, books, and pool table; FREE breakfast (bagels and toast with peanut butter, jelly, cream cheese, and butter; 6 kinds of cereal; milk; real orange juice; fruit cocktail; coffee and tea); FREE local area maps and info; BBQ's; and more. ~ Mark Schneider, General Manager HI-DC Hide Owner CommentsRead Owner Comments Mark Richard, from Philippines ~ Jun 9 2009

They had a lot of events for guests to sign in and that was great. It was quite safe that every guest needed an electronic key to access into the guest floors and her/his room. Walk distance to the most popular sightseeing places and washington convention center. But a little noisy while I was sleeping at night due to the nearby construction. Some staff at front desk were not friendly to me and other guests I met there. They didn't respect our language barrier and not tend to service patiently a
Jiaching: I am sorry about the street construction outside. Usually, they stop working around 5:00 PM, but sometimes they do started early in the morning. But I am most concerned about how you were treated. Although we are having significant technical difficulties, this should not have detracted from your experience. More information in tourist aspect (maps, locations, advise, something similar to recommendation places to visit in one day, 2-day, 3-day, etc.) would be awesome. Esp. maps provided ...
Thang: You are absolutely right! We are now creating exactly those sorts of itineraries for our hostellers. This will go well with our local area map (FREE), are rack cards, and Info Center. It's a convenient, but otherwise just ok place to stay in. In fact, when I was there their system was down, so everybody had to pay a flat rate of 30 dollars per night, as opposed to the 42 that I had booked it for. If it had been 42, I would have probably be more annoyed, despite the free breakfast which was very basic but very convenient as downtown Washington doesn't cater well to the budget traveller.
Staff were quite awful, at reception I was usually greeted with a shrug and an annoyed 'y
Sebastian: Yes, it is true that we are experiencing some technical difficulties. Things are still a little hairy, but we hope to have everyting back up and running next week. Regardless of these challenges, this should have in no way deteracted from the level of service you received. I sincerely apologize for the breakdown. During such difficult times, we should work to be extra helpful to our guests. I do hope you enjoyed the discount, though! ~ Mark Schneider, General Manager HI-DC Hide Owner CommentsRead Owner Comments Sebastian, from Germany ~ Jun 6 2009

There were some serious technical difficulties during my stay. Regardless the staff was wonderful, the location perfect, the rooms and facilities clean, and my stay was wonderful. I'd stay again in a heartbeat and will look to other HI locations to stay at in the future.
