It's a really good House! Everybody is friendly and very helpful. There was just one thing I didn't like: the bed was a little bit to hard.

Overall, Red Lantern House is a good choice, although the location is probably the least attractive aspect of the place. However, the charm is sure to make up for the less-desirable location. Also, if you select the shared bathrooms option, keep in mind they are sort of 'outside', without heat, and so in the dead of winter, taking a shower should prove to be uncomfortable.
We checkout early as they were doing renovations (I suspect for the imminent Olympics in August), so the paint smell was getting to our heads. However, under different circumstances, we would probably have stayed our full intended time.

Beautiful decoration and atmosphere. Big very clean rooms (cleaned daily). Great location. This place is so good we came back from the north side of Beijing after just one night - the alternative didn't compare!

I was very happy with the whole set up. The only thing I struggled with was the putrid smell of smoke in the sitting area. I would suggest a good air conditioning system or a separate area for non-smokers. Being allergic to smoke, as well as strongly disliking the smell of it, made that hard to cope with.

Very nice hostel with lots of character. Very clean, friendly staff. Only ate there once as there are many restaurants in the area. I also got them to pick me up from the airport for a hassle free trip to the hostel after a long flight. The guy spoke no english but he seemed a friendly guy. Booked the city day tour with the hostel which was fine. Most of the attractions are spread out so it was nice to chill out on the bus without having to get the subway/taxis everywhere. Felt the forbidden city tour was a little rushed. But its so big it took me another day of walking around at my own pace to to see most of it. There were some compulsory shopping stops but they didnt pressure us into buying anything it was very optional. Also booked my great wall tour with the hostel. An amazing day. Basically they drop you off and let you do your own thing for the day then have dinner and back on the bus. Which is nice to get away from the crowds.
I stayed here towards the end of the November. So it was pretty quiet there, not much activity. Im sure this would be a great place in the busier tourist season.
This hostel is in the Hutong area which is undergoing major redevelopment for the olympics. So expect allot of dust and building work going on. Although i never had any problems sleeping from noise. It seems very quiet in the hostel.
Overall I would reccomend this hostel and if i were to go back to Beijing I would stay here again.
For a traditional hutong experience, this place is a must.

The staff were wonderful and attentive. They did everything they could to make us feel at home, and even a part of their family as they geared up for the Chinese New Years Festival.
Other comments have warned that the hostel is difficult to find, however, if you memorize the instructions they provide, and pay attention to the details regarding where McDonalds and Dairy Queen are located, you should not have a problem. The bus stops are before and after the street of the hostel. The dairy queen that they describe has a bright orange and white sign, and is joined with a local fast food restaurant starting with a Y. Good luck!
