A great hostel in a great location. The room was very clean, good food, friendly staff. The only bad point is that the beds are rock hard. The matress is about as thick as a towel. But hey, after walking 10km along the Great Wall its pretty easy to sleep any way.

By far the worst staff I've ever had to deal with. No english, changing prices, lies about the local bus schedule in order to scam people to take taxis. They eat their meals in the restaurant and you have to wait to order breakfast or dinner. Dorm showers are iffy. How is this an HI hostel?

The hostel is OK. The location is great, and the rooms are good. The Hostels restaurant is really expensive so i dont recommend to eat there. There is only one bathroom and is not very clean. The only problem we had is when we arrive they told us we didnt have any reservation. So the communication bewteen Hostelworld and the hostel might not be very good, they realize until the next day. So just print the page that shows that you pay the booking fee. Its worth going to Simatai, dont miss the change.
The hostel appeared to be undergoing a major refurbishment that is definately needed. The location is fantastic but the place was dirty and there was limited hot water, 1 hour one day & none the next.

This hostel had an ideal location... that's about all I can say for it. The rooms were filthy. I'm a backpacker and have stayed in many hostels, in many countries, over many years. I have no problem with roughing it but I have never come across a hostel that has been as unsanitary as this one. The location is great, the food is so-so. Expensive, though decent. Also, be careful on the fine print. The staff are not good about giving you their rules, like when check-out times are and such, and you WILL loose your deposit plus get charged a pretty penny for any mistakes or miscommunications.
We did not stay as the room was too dirty and mouldy and the bed looked slept in and the whole place looked run down and there was no water for a shower until 7 pm so we gave up and went back to Beijing It was very very disappointing
