Sitting On The City Walls Courtyard House in Beijing, China

My friend and I loved the character in this hostel, and I really enjoyed staying in a hutong. The common area was fantastic: fun, friendly, and charming. While the rooms were well appointed, I found the lighting a bit dim , and the bathroom was a bit dirty (tiled walls had hair on them...) That said, the staff were more friendly and helpful than any of the 4- and 5-star hotel staff we encountered on the rest of our trip! Sarah, from Canada ~ 3rd Sep 2009

We loved our short stay at City Walls. The instructions about where it is were excellent and the warnings that it was a bit hard to find made it feel like an adventure. This is a really great place to stay. The location is decent, as I is close to many of the major sites (forbidden city, nearby parks, and some of the good shopping areas). But 'nearby' means something like a 30 minute walk in a city the size of Beijing, and the hostel isn't right next to much of anything. Where I think this hostel really excelled was character of the common area, which was very nice and cool, and how clean and nice the rooms and bathrooms are. THis place was really great with lots of character. The staff were very pleasant, helpful and spoke english well. I loved the courtyard as it was really a nice place to relax and get out of the very very small rooms. Unfortunately people smoked, a lot, in the courtyard and the windows of your room open to the enclosed courtyard so it was quite annoying to 1. have to walk through the smoke filled courtyard to get to your room and 2. not be able to open your room windows to get air.
