  • If you have never seen what San Francisco looks like along 6th Street and Market, and south from there, you will need to prepare yourself: there are some crazy homeless people there. And… they are basically harmless. Once you get to the Pontiac, you will find yourself in a clean environment, surrounded by friendly staff and fellow guests who are all lovely people. I was suspicious about being almost 50 years old and having to share a bathroom down the hall. Four nights, no problems.

  • Yes, this hostel is in a somewhat "gnarly" part of the city, but as a single woman, I still felt quite safe and the private room was comfortable and quiet. The shower was hot and clean. Having breakfast available each morning helped me financially. I relied on public transportation which was easily accessible. The staff was very friendly and helpful. If you can somehow put your blinders on when going out into this part of the city, this hostel is well worth the price- and then some!

  • The area around the hotel is really dangerous! Impossible to go for a walk or come back at night or after the sunset. A lot of homeless and drugs in the area. There are two bathrooms each floor and it is hard to find them available. The staff is nice. There is a computer that you can use for free and breakfast . Breads, bananas. apples, cereal, milk, coffee. We had to order food at night because we couldn't go out, there were homeless people all around and people buying drugs.

  • Great location with convenience store right outside. One of the cheapest in the area. Nice clean sheets and towels. Safe location, walked home from clubs around 3am. Great experience.

  • I stayed at the Pontiac for a week and had a great time! The free breakfast was awesome, good selection of food, the building was safe and secure. The location was a little dodgy with all the homeless people around but they pretty much ignored you. Only problem was that the wifi didn't reach the 4th floor so if I didn't have data on my phone I would not have been happy. Otherwise a great stay at the Pontiac! Highly recommended!

  • Guys at front desk were great! Hotel is really close to the city centre but it's not a location you would let your child walk alone.

  • We stayed one week at the Pontiac Hostel. The hostel itself is okay; it's good deal. Meanwhile, I do not recommend this place to anyone due to the bad district. We are two young french girls and everytime we're coming back to our hostel after a day of visits, we met some crazy people, crackers mostly asking for money and screaming to us. Day after day, we get more and more scared. People told us to take a cab each time we're going out at night. It's lots of "pressure" and bad atomsphere.
