  • A place without charm, a lot of "don't do" signs. Some of the staff were very welcoming, others not that much.

  • I booked my own room at Tomato Hostel because of the great price, and enjoyed my stay. The location is great for side trips by rail, but quite far from Kyoto's main tourist attractions, eateries and nightlife. However you can get to all these places via local buses (best to buy the day pass for 500 yen because a single bus ride is 220 minimum). I was glad this hostel had a washing machine and rooftop for drying, and there's also a kitchen for those who like to cook.
