This is probably the best place we have stayed in on our whole 6 month trip. It is a hotel not a hostel but it is as cheap as a hostel. The staff are so nice and can not do enough for you. OUr room was massive with 3 beds, air con a TV and our own bathroom with hot water. Breakfast is included which is really nice. They have a selection of traditional Sri Lankan breakfast, hoppers, noodles, curry, eggs then they have toast and jam, cereal and fresh fruit like you have never tasted. The hotel is just a few minutes walk from the beach which is really nice and there are some shops at the top of the road. The only problem we had was contacting them through e mail to change our dates and book a taxi from the airport. The best thing to do is phone them beforehand to book a taxi and they will send their driver. It costs $20 with them and we had to pay $30 for a driver at the airport. A great place to stay with a great location and the lovliest staff you caould wish for.

An ok hotel but disappointed i stayed there a week and they did'nt clean my room once......i had to take my towel down to change it!

I spent two weeks here in early 2007, the room was cheap, very clean, large and had free wifi with a good connection. It was well located, about a 15 minute tuktuk ride from Columbo city centre, so away from crowds and close to a lovely beach. The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly at all times - would return to the Tropic Inn.
I can highly recommend the place for dining. Food is very good to a reasonable price.

First room was lovely, clean with a balcony. I went on a tour which was ok and when I came back they put me in a ground floor room with no balcony, no window, poor shower and smelt of mildew that cost the same... Mmm think they should have different rates for different rooms... staff were lovely though.
This is a great little hostel - good poition near the beach,restaurants and shops. the staff speak great english - just watch out for the OVER ENTHUSUASTIC sales pitch about "EVERYTHING that they can do for you" - which sad to say did take the shine off my stay - forewarned is forearmed so ...enjoy!
They do lie however. Because I didnt end up doing a tour through their contacts I was told that when I returned from tour that I wouldnt be able to get a room as they were closed for "renovations", absolute rubbish of course. So make sure that any enquiries outside of this place you make that they are in the dark, if you wish to return!
Staff were really excellent and helpful with everything. Food was good and cheap. Airport transfer was a bit expensive, and you can probably arrange cheaper on the ground there, but good for convenience
