The hostel as a whole was pretty good. The staff spoke English and were very helpful with basic touristy info. The room was cool, the shower was hot. The only negatives were that the bed was very uncomfortable and the bathroom ran out of toilet paper daily. Make sure to have your own as a back-up.

I really enjoyed my stay at Vila Carioca. I felt completely safe the entire time I stayed there. The staff was so wonderful to me, so helpful and caring! I will be back very soon.

Rooms were very pricey for what they were - understandable given it was carnival but would have been nice to have been offered slightly improved service (variety of breakfast, clean sheets, clean room etc) given the huge increase. However, thought the tours were a bit of a rip off e.g. R$ 50 for Maracana match vs R$ 15 + metro fair when we went ourselves.

really really enjoyed my stay here, lovely building, great helpful staff, pretty communal area that was great for meeting people. the stafff made us a lovely barbeque which was delicious and they also were really helpful about giving us advice and went out of their way to help. my only real gripe was that cleanliness wasnt as good as i would like, the toilets were sometimes dirty and didnt flush properly and the toilet bins should have been emptied more regularly, also i prefer it when the toilet and shower facilities are separate as its more clean.
all the people that were staying at the hostel were really friendly as well and i enjoyed the excursions organised by the hostel.

Dont let the advertised monkeys fool you. There are no monkeys!
All the staff were great and went above and beyond for us, even booking our ongoing hostel at Ilha Grande. (Where we did see monkeys).
Had loads of fun with travellers and staff, great atmosphere.
Botofogo beach, 2 mins walk was polluted and un-swimable, best going to Panema or Copacobana by bus or taxi ($12 R).
We would stay at Villa Carioca again.
