This review is six months late, but since I also stayed at bAKpAK on my third trip just a month ago, I feel qualified to say that this is a great hostel! The location is in Gion, where the action is in Kyoto. The hostel is next to a grocery store(!) and within walking distance to a multitude of restaurants and shops. The staff is great and very helpful! Should my travels take me through Kyoto again, I would stay here.

This hostel was very clean and very homey. There was a fully-equiped kitchen and living room style common room with a big tv and computer. Our room had our own computer/tv as well. the location was ideal and easy to find. I was a bit skeptical about the security since the doors were never locked, and there was never anyone on duty. Nothing bad happened though :) Would definitely stay here again!

Clean hostel, comfortable beds, hot showers, fantastic location and fabulously friendly staff-in particular the manager Hana who was more than happy to go out of her way to help. Reccommend it to anyone and everyone!

Great location near the center of things. Good if you want to stay out all night partying. Not bad if you don't. People can be loud in the common rooms and it isn't that noisy in the bed rooms.

No key deposit. Good location with lots of stuff nearby. Free Internet, free wifi. Good place to meet people!

I really loved the hostel and thought it was the perfect place to stay in Kyoto. I met really neat people and felt safe for myself and my belongings. I however had a really hard time finding anyone that knew where the place was.

Their website seems to imply it's a family-friendly atmosphere, but I would not agree with that. The fifth floor is decorated mostly with images of cannabis, and there's certainly porn on the walls of the first floor lounge (mixed in with other images). I was told there was bread for breakfast, but I never actually found it. Hmm. That being said, the staff is really friendly, and the location is great (basically in Shijo). Basically, don't bring your kids, and know you might have to wait to use the internet sometimes (three computers total, one on 1st, 3rd, 5th floors).

The hostel staff was very nice, and spoke English well. They were surprised when we spoke such fluent Japanese, but they went out of their way to help lots of people during our stay. The hostel was fairly difficult to get to, as we misread the directions, but the location, (In Gion) was wonderful, and I loved the supermarket next door. We, unfortunately had some smelly room mates, but you can't win them all, right? :D
