Forget the Hem Hotel/Hem Budget Hotel in Amsterdam – Our room was disgusting – it smelt of urine, was unclean and to top it off our room was broken into (No physical signs of break-in so an inside job...?) The Hem Hotel did absolutely nothing to help us – they were not interested – they would not call the Police, told us they did not even have their phone number and left us with no alternative but pay for a taxi to take us to the Police Station. Terrible place, The room was in an outside building, I had never noticed if the door was really locked and to be sure I needed to put a chair to hold the door at nights. The television didn't work, so did the bathroom, the water soaked the entire bathroom, which was blocked and then began to invade the room. The chek-out supposely was to be at 11' am but people from staff started to hit the door at 9 am, so I couldn't sleep well. Most disgusting hostel I've ever stayed at. Had to walk past soiled mattresses and dirty towels to get to my room. The hotel part of Hem is niceish, but the hostel part is so gross. The entire building smelled like stale cat urine. It took between 20 and 40 minutes to get to Museumplein or the city center this hostel is seriously in the middle of no where. Internet costs an extra TEN EURO PER DAY! Felt very unsafe, and staff was combative and apathetic (not just to me, but to everyone else I he Sarah, from USA ~ 15th Aug 2011

A bit far from the center - about 30 minutes on the tram. The door was a bit gnawed around the handle, so although it stayed closed, I was always surprised that it did. Internet is not free and only in the lobby (2.50 euro for 15 minutes). Mariya, from USA ~ 26th Jul 2011

Hostel was ok, staff was veeery busy all the time therefore didn't acknowledge you.. there is NO breakfast inlcuded but towels are! Location is ok.. it's about 4-5 blocks aways from the tramway stop and it's about 25 minute ride from centraal station. Room was good but toilet was pretty bad...
