Dirty, rooms were not air conditioned, provided sheets were dingy, mattresses were torn and dirty, back doors to property were open and unwatched, and staff was less than friendly/helpful. They apparently failed to record my reservation, and only because I was willing to pay in cash was I offered a bed. I've stayed in many hostels in the United States and abroad. I enjoyed my stay at Hilltop Hostel and would stay there again if in Washington DC in the future. Where else can you stay in DC for 24 bucks a night? The staff were friendly and helpful, the one guy Ron is quite a colourful character! Although a ways from the city center (only 15 minutes on the Metro)there were adequate stores and restaurants nearby. The bike rental, free and with $20 deposit was good also. Hilltop is nice hostel with reasonable price and quite convenient location (right next to the red line metro). However, the room is so cold when I stayed there (end of October, 2011). HOA, from Vietnam ~ 2nd Nov 2011

The worst hostel we've stayed in. Hobos and homeless people sleeping in mixed dorms, everything is dirty and extremely smelly, no common room. There were no locks in doors so you can come in take whatever you want and go away. If you want to have good time in Washington DC spend a few extra bucks for something more clean, safer and more tourist friendly or if you`re hobo hit this hostel its for you.
