Pros: great common areas, pancakes for breakfast, excellent security, friendly staff, access to a washing machine, nice garden area, clean bathrooms and showers, well-maintained kitchen, wi-fi and movies,staff will arrange airport shuttles and tours (the City Tour is an amazing bargain you see so much!) Cons: rats in the garden area, neighborhood seems a little bit iffy, private rooms vary in quality mine was VERY, VERY musty.
Really glad you liked the place and had a good time. In the garden there is actually some animal that looks like a rat but is native, seriously!! They come out at night time and wonder around the walls and roof. Scared the hell out me first time I saw one. I keep saying the neighborhood isn't actually iffy, I see how people could think that but guests have more probelms in casco Viejo than they do near us. And yes, the rooms do get musty, it's an on going problem that we have found hard to control, being in the tropics doesn't help but we are trying to fix the problem. Thanks for the review, we appreciate it.

This is an ideal jump point from Panama City to tours and activities. The staff is friendly and helpful, the kitchen provides a cheap alternative to eating out and there is a large selection of movies when you are ready to chill. The location is not in the best part of town, but all the buses pick up right out front. Make sure to try the unnamed Red Roof restaurant...outdoor dining with reasonable pricing. this place was great,Will is one of the most helpful people you could meet(and yes,overworked)..we stayed here in order to get our boat tri to colombia organised and Will was as helpful as you could get,he has regular dealings with a lot of the captains which is a huge help..the hostel has a good atmosphere and is in a safe and easy to get around part of the city ie restaurants and bars..great for anyone with a realistic outlook on hostel life!!or any aussies wanting to hear a familiar voice! ash, from Australia ~ 15th Jul 2011

The staff at Mamallena hostels was very helpful and efficient. I had a delay in my flight but the pre-arranged shuttle was still waiting for me after immigration. I would definitely suggest the shuttle as we have heard horror stories of incidents with cabs from the airport (when you have all your stuff!!!.) Mamallena is safe and secure and has yummy make-your-ownpancake breakfasts- one less meal that you have to buy when you're on a budget like we were.Air conditioning in the bedrooms at night i Jane, from USA ~ 25th Jun 2011
