Crystal Hostel was an excellent place to start our journey through Africa. It's a bit far from the centre of Accra but right in de middle of Ghanaian city life. Auntie, uncle and the daughters, thanks for welcoming us in your home. The arranged airport pickup in the middle of the night unfortunately went wrong.

While many of the other travellers I met at Crystal were staying long-term, I used it as a jumping off point at the beginning of the trip and travelled around the country. When it came time to leave we checked out several other places in Accra (closer to town) but we ended up back at Crystal - we knew the accommodations were decently priced and of good quality. Just as every says, Auntie and Uncle are very sweet... we didn't get to know them as well as some others did but our experience was nothing but positive. Crystal is pretty far out of town in Darkuman - a suburb that most taxi drivers aren't very familiar with. It's possible to catch a tro-tro out there from Circle Station but this was a bit confusing. A taxi was 6-7 cedis at the beginning of the trip but I think we went from the hostel all the way to the airport for 5 our last day. There's no door on the bathroom in the room, so you better be comfortable with your travel companion. It's a lovely, safe place for the price, if you can handle the commute! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Asides from work, I arrived in Ghana to experience a different culture and way of life. The hostel's location is a bit out of the main commercial areas, but catching a tro-tro is part of the fun. The hostel itself is very safe, but one may feel differently when stepping outside, though I had not had any negative experiences. Uncle, auntie, and the rest of the staff were fantastic; I could not have asked for more - super friendly.
