The best located backpackers in town, Alice Springs YHA is built within the grounds of an historic outdoor movie theatre.
This is definitely somewhere different to stay! The hostel has the big outdoor movie screen showing a free indigenous movie about Aboriginal culture nightly.
It has an attractive outdoor area and swimming pool, all adding to the relaxed friendly atmosphere. All the rooms are air conditioned, and there is a BBQ, internet access and tour desk.
In a very central location, you can easily explore all the sights of Alice Springs from the YHA. The hostel is close to shops, cafes and pubs. Base yourself here for exploring the Western McDonnell Ranges including Simpsons Gap and Glen Helen, or for trips to Ayers Rock. The hostel tour desk can help with bookings and there are lots of YHA member discounts.

Rooms need a little more sound proofing. There is a sign saying people should not make noise in the courtyard after 10pm, but reception closes at 8pm, so there is no one to enforce this. Windows in the rooms were screwed in so there could not be closed all the way, which prevented closing the noise out. Overall, good hostel, but if you need sleep due to being on a tour for 3 days and you slept on the ground and got up before sunrise each day, probably not the best location for your beauty sleep.
