Armenian Adventure

ARMENIAN ADVENTURE Submit a Tale here | More Tales
It was last summer that I really got off the beaten path and spent two weeks in Yerevan, Armenia. To this day I have met no one, other than Armenians, who have been to this capital city. As I have travelled through former Soviet Union countries before, I expected the drab, bleak, utilitarian buildings and drab, bleak people. I couldn't have been more wrong.

Yerevan, a city about the size of Detroit or Edinburgh, has completely cast off the remnants of its soviet oppressors. I didn't see one statue of Lenin or a hammer/sickle flag. The weather (Aug) was hot but not overbearing. The streets were divided equally between paved and dirt (much reconstruction) but all the comforts of the west were available and usually dirt cheap. Examples include a car/driver/gas for the whole day for about $25 US and a furnished, A/C, nice apartment in the city centre for around $100/week. That's a lot by their standards, cheap by mine.

The food was incredible, kind of Asian meets middle-eastern, and really cheap. I highly recommend staying away from tourist traps as the prices go up by 10 -20 times. Now, for the down side, English is very rarely spoken. You can hire a local for around $10 /day to lead you around, or, if you speak any Russian you will be fine. Armenian is a beautiful and difficult language.

The history is awesome and most sights are free or really cheap. Crime is super-low for a city of several million. I did a lot of walking at night in the heart of the city and with the exception of having cigarettes bummed, had no attention (not even prostitutes). If you want to go to somewhere different without spending a bundle, I recommend Armenia. Also, the customs / passport control was the easiest I have ever experienced.
