My Experience in Tikal

MY EXPERIENCE IN TIKAL Submit a Tale here | More Tales
Getting up at 4:30 in the morning and driving from Antigua to Guatemala City and then flying to Flores wasn't exactly my idea of a good time but by 9 am when I arrived at Tikal national park I realized it was all worth it.

Getting off of the plane my traveling companion Omara and I were very surprised at how humid the weather was. After spending a week in the mountains of southern Guatemala it was a definite change.

We stayed in the bungalows of the Hotel Tikal Inn for the night and took the tour from a guide named Marvin on the first day. I strongly suggest taking the tour, it gives you a good run around the park before you set off by yourself.

The real adventure starts the next day when Omara and I and a few others got up at about 6 am and made the hike to Temple IV to see the sunrise. It was an overcast morning but we made the hike anyway.

There were about 20 people on top of the temple when we got there. Not being able to see much we just sat there for a while. A Guatemalan man got up and said in Spanish that he and his group were going to meditate and Omara (who speaks fluent Spanish) asked if we could join them. The man happily obliged.

The mediation was completely in Spanish so I had no idea what was going on until Omara translated for me. At some point in the meditation the man who was leading talked about how we were to think of the sun and think of it going to our homes and to our friends and family and then around the world and back to the temple.

Since I had my eyes closed I couldn't see but I was later told the sun parted the clouds and shone down on the temple for a few minutes. After the mediatation we all got up and hugged. I have honestly never felt that refreshed. It was probably the most spiritual experience I have ever had.

Omara and I then walked around the park for a few hours and explored some the of the temples that the tour didn't include. We caught a shuttle bus back to Flores around 2.00 and were back in Antigua about 5.00. A day I will never forget.
