Shari and I had never stayed in a hostel before, (40 yrs. old) but last year I stumbled on to this site, and lured by the promise of $20 a night rooms at Shark's Cove on Oahu, I decided to visit the place I have always wanted to go to - Hawaii.

My friends all said I was crazy, but I took off by myself anyway, and between my airfare, room and car rental, spent a total of $800 for a two week trip that I will never forget. Next year I figure I can stay out there for a month for a little bit more than that...and, I am going back.

I had the time of my life. I figured I'd be alone the whole time, but ended up not alone for more than a day. The friends I met will be with me forever (we stay in touch through e-mail) among them, Ze from Portugal, Luke from England, Shamon from Israel, and Jeff from Oahu. Thanks guys for making me feel part of your group.

I carried their boards in my car, and we went out to surf, danced in the clubs at night, and had a bonfire on the beach under a full moon with a backdrop of 30 ft. waves crashing on the shore.

Who needs to spend bundles of money to do what you want? Forget the fancy tour buses and guided tours. Grab yourself a map and take off. See the island like a local. You can grab plate lunches all over town for about $6.00, and they are wonderful. I lost 15 lbs. eating properly and hiking up Didmond Head and out to beautiful Manoa Falls.

I know I will never stay in a hotel again, so thanks for getting me started. In a year you can visit me on the North Shore in Haleiwa where I plan to spend the winter Nov. thru April. No more Michigan cold for me.

And everyone says Hawaii is expensive. If I can afford it, so can you. Aloha!!
