Rome, Italy - Primo Maggio
The 1st of May is a popular day for festivals in many countries and cities. In Rome, they welcome the spring season with Primo Maggio. This is a big music festival that takes place in Rome's Piazza San Giovanni. The festival line-up is kept a secret until a few days before this popular May event. Primo Maggio is a must see if you are travelling around Italy and are stopping off in Rome.
UK and Ireland - May Day
All across Ireland and the UK May Day is marked with festivities and events. May Day celebrations come from pagan times but many festivals still mark this day. In Ireland, May 1st marks the start of summer or Bealtaine with many festivities. Bealtaine is also recognised in Scotland and the night before big bonfires are lit in many areas of Scotland. England also marks May Day with events like dancing round the Maypole and morris dancing that you can find in many towns and villages around England.
Puebla, Mexico - Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for the 'fifth of May'. It is a regional holiday in Mexico mainly celebrated in the state of Puebla. The holiday commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The date is also observed in places around the USA as a celebration of Mexican pride and heritage.
Cannes, France - Cannes Film Festival
One of the most prestigious film festivals in the industry takes place in May in Cannes. Every year the leaders of the worldwide film industry gather in Cannes for the screening of many films. Awards are also given in Cannes with the most prestigious being the Palme d'Or ("Golden Palm") for the best film. So if film star spotting is your thing then get to Cannes in France for May 12th this year.
