One of the first things that will strike you as you wander around Amsterdam with your map trying to distinguish one canal from the other is the amount of bicycle traffic on the streets. The narrow, cobbled streets of Amsterdam are best navigated by bike and one look at any bicycle parking area in the city will prove the popularity of being on two wheels.
So, for your next visit to Amsterdam take a leaf out of the local’s book and get out on a bicycle. Bicycle rental shops can be found all over the city and you can avail of different options from day rental to keeping a bicycle for the duration of your stay. Amsterdam is very bicycle friendly so getting around the city on two wheels will be relatively easy. However, one mistake some tourists make is forgetting that it is a means of transport for many so make sure you stay alert and watch out for fellow cyclists and traffic.
There are many bike rental options around Amsterdam so shop around for the best deals and bicycles on offer. Some bikes will be covered in advertising for the rental shop so if you would prefer to blend in with the locals maybe go for a more understated option. Some shops will also provide you with cycle routes or group biking trips. You could also get out of the city and take a day to explore to the countryside, but make sure you plan your route beforehand as you don’t want to end up on a motorway in an unfamiliar country on your rented bike!
And as well as getting to explore Amsterdam like a local you will also be getting some great exercise, which means you won't have to feel guilty about eating one or two more portions of Dutch style frites!
