What is the one thing you can't go on holidays without?

What is the one thing you can't go on holidays without?

At the start of the week we posed a question to our always active Hostels.com facebook fans! Our question this week was ‘What is the one thing you can't go on holidays without?’ We all know how hard it can be when packing for a getaway, especially if you are only bringing your luggage as carry-on. It can be hard to plan ahead for a week’s worth of clothes and necessities; and even harder if you are going for longer on a backpacking trip!

Our trusted facebook followers are seasoned travelers and know their stuff when it comes to all things travel so here’s their tips for what not to leave home without, as well as a few great packing tips that we have picked up along our travels that have proven to be worthwhile!

Ann-Kathrin Sika keeps it logical with her tips of bringing your passport and money. In fact a couple of people made a similar suggestion including Juanjose Vasquez who recommended that you bring your wallet and Patrick O’Connor suggested that you shouldn’t forget to bring your credit cards! We imagine it would be tough to get away without any form of cash but remember that a trip away doesn’t always have to cost you a small fortune! Save money by booking into a cheap hostel and also have a read of our ‘Free things to do in...’ features for tips on free things to do in certain cities.

Vanessa Radl recommended that you pack a lot of motivation! We agree Vanessa. Sometimes it can be tough to stay in tourist mode for a few days in a row, but it is worth it at the end when you get to see all you set out to on a trip or in a certain city. Diana So has a similar mindset with her tip of packing a good attitude!

Steve Cleaver knows how to stay up to date on his travels by packing his iPhone before a trip. It can be very handy to have a phone with some form of internet access on your travels to keep you up to date with your emails, family and friends. And this can also come in very useful if you need to book that last minute train journey or make a change to your travel itinerary. A lot of backpackers we’ve crossed paths with in recent months who are travelling for a long stretch of time have recommended that investing in a netbook (small laptop) as it makes for a great addition to your travels, especially now that so many hostels are offering free WiFi.

There were not a lot of calls to bring clothes which we thought could be a little bit problematic! There was a comment about bringing your favourite t-shirt and sandals, but for some people this can be a tough choice as they may have a few favourite tops or pairs of shoes! There is a lot to be said for travelling light so pack well as it will pay off, particularly if you are moving around to a few places. Be very severe with what makes it from your wardrobe to your backpack! You’ll thank us in the end!
