10 things you have to experience in Thailand
Thailand is a popular destination for those wanting sun, sea and sand. While you can get that in spades, the rest of the country also has so much to offer too.
It's the capital of Thailand and you will most likely fly in and out of the city. But do take a few days to make the most of your time here. The street food, markets, friendly locals but most of all the amazing temples. Go see the large reclining buddha at Wat Pho - it has to be seen to be believed.
Khao San Road
This famous street is quite touristy but it's worth seeing. You'll find bars, massage shops and plenty of accommodation. Haggle with a market seller for the 'best price' on a new bikini. Also a popular place for a night out.
One of biggest memories you'll leave Thailand with is the quality of the food. From soup to rice dishes to street food, you'll want to know how to whip these up when you get home. There are cookery classes offered in most areas so take advantage. You'll be shown around food markets and be able to make and eat you meals for the rest of the day.
Another big city north of Thailand where you can see and do so almost as much - if not more - as in Bangkok. Hire a bike and take your chances with the busy traffic to see the architecture and history Chiang Mai has to offer.
Thailand is a mecca for sun worshippers due to the number of beaches they have to offer. Koh Samui is also good for scuba-diving and snorkeling and not far away Koh Chang is a place where a lot of the locals holiday so why not join them here.
A full moon party
During the day you can sun yourself but you can dance the night away at a full moon party until the early hours. Head to Koh Phangan for the best parties. Grab yourself a cocktail, smear yourself in glo-paint and enjoy the vibe.
Different modes of transport
An overnight train will take you from the south of the country to Bangkok and onwards to Chiang Mai. An attendant comes around the next morning to turn the beds back into day seats - magic! In any of these destinations take a tuk-tuk to wherever you need to go for a real local experience.
A ladyboy show
This is something you should really experience. Fabulous entertainment with singing and dance routines that Beyonce would be jealous of. It really is hard to believe that these are men dressed as women.
A trip to Thailand wouldn't be complete without a ride on an elephant. Just make sure you do your research and find reputable companies offering this. Another unforgettable experience to meet one of the friendliest animals on earth. As long as you don't try to steal their food.
Go see a Thai boxing match while you're here. They can be very entertaining and some may also have rounds where they blind-fold the participants. It makes for comedy gold seeing these fearsome fighters wander around bumping into everything but their opponent.
