Backpackers helped by Abta
If you happen to fall in the latter category, then I have got excellent news for you! Travel association Abta - which was founded over 50 years ago so it probably knows its stuff - has launched what it's calling Travel Buddy. It's an email and mobile messaging service for backpackers to keep them up to date on holiday information pertinent to their destinations once they've booked their trips, prior to travelling and in emergency situations while they are away. What a great idea! Even if you're not of a nervous disposition, your parents (most likely, your mother) will be and it could be worth signing up to this just to give them peace of mind (and, of course, keep them off your back).
A tailored Know Before You Go package will be developed by the Abta team for each customer and sent to them in an email before they head off on cheap travel holidays. It will also give gentle reminders about travel insurance, which I know can slip backpackers' minds when they have other things to think about, like finding hostels in Europe to stay in.
That said, insurance is always a must, something that more and more backpackers seem to be agreeing with as Direct Travel Insurance has just released figures showing a 25 per cent increase in sales to travellers between July 2008 and the same period this year.
