Backpacking chocoholics head to St Lucia
I never knew this but St Lucia apparently has quite a choc-tastic history, dating well back to the 1700s when over 1,000 cocoa trees were planted in Anse Mamin and Emerald Estate. Since then, they have been lovingly tended by residents of the Caribbean island and the produce has been harvested and sent to the local market so the people of St Lucia are sure to know a thing or two about chocolatey goodness. Excellent news, then, to hear that the region is holding a chocolate festival between December 4th and 6th. Yummy!

Backpackers with a sweet tooth should definitely head to the area as a variety of events are being put on and concoctions will be made available to visitors, cooked up by chef - and winner of the James Beard Award - Allen Susser. Gorge yourself on chocolate-inspired canapes, iced chocolate chai and other menu options, all centring around - you guessed it - chocolate! For those backpackers who are afraid of getting a cavity or two, eating isn't just the name of the game at this festival. The main event is an exploration of the Emerald Estate cocoa plantation, which also offers guests the chance to witness the process of making chocolate from cocoa beans. You can also give pod-picking and fermenting a go, which sounds quite fun.

If you do go, you'll be an on-trend traveller. According to Expedia's Jonathan Cudworth, more and more people are interested in combining food and holidays and are particularly keen on vacations that include a bit of learning, such as wine tours or cookery courses.ADNFCR-2435-ID-19354673-ADNFCR
