Key West, first of all, is to be the venue for the Pirates in Paradise Festival from November 28th to December 6th, a series of events that promises a rip-roaring good time for all who go. Over 150 piratical entertainers are on board to provide fun and games, as well as many actors ready to spin a historical yarn or two for visitors to the region who may not know about the Keys' dastardly past. Apparently, this particular part of Florida was, in days of yore, a stronghold for pirates. Backpackers can enjoy sailing the high seas with Captain Finbar on board his trusty vessel, the Schooner Wolf, or take part in the annual plank-walking championships.
Aside from Pirates in Paradise, Key Largo's Pirate Festival taking place from October 17th to 19th features a costume contest, rum tasting, treasure hunts, underwater poker and a thieves' market, as well as more walking the plank. Furthermore, Black Caesar - a legendary Florida pirate of old who terrorised the waters in the early 19th century - is reported to be coming back from the dead in order to strike fear in the hearts of men, women and children at this year's festival. Yo, ho, ho and a bottle of rum!
