To my mind, one of the great destinations for this sort of activity is Berlin - as it is the home of one of the most iconic images of the 20th century. I was a bit too young to grasp the significance at that time, but next week marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
So for anyone staying in a Berlin hostel, there are all sorts of events taking place to commemorate the event. I won't be there myself, but the Daily Mail has highlighted some of the major happenings around the city.
From November 5th to 9th, the Festival of Freedom will be held - focusing on the Brandenburg Gate. A symbolic tribute to the wall's collapse will be paid on the final day, when 1,000 2.5-metre high dominos laid out along its original route will be toppled. Gordon Brown and Hillary Clinton are expected to make speeches, while the MTV Europe Music Awards will be held in Berlin on November 5th, with rock legends U2 playing four songs to mark the anniversary.
Meanwhile, anyone staying in a Berlin hostel in the next two weeks will be able to visit a free exhibition at Alexanderplatz, documenting the events leading up to the reunification of the city.
