A sales promotion manager at the German National Tourist Office has stated that Berlin, alongside Munich, is the most popular destination in the country for city breaks, suggesting that it might be a nice area to head to if you have a spare weekend or two up your sleeve.
Apparently, a reason growing in popularity for visiting Berlin and other German cities is the spa breaks and river cruises that are on offer for tourists and merrymakers. I myself have travelled down many a German river in this way and let me tell you, it's one of the finest ways to get about. The wind in your hair, a sense of freedom and all the while getting to know a city in an entirely new way.
The tourist office's Karin Lukosch emphasised the joys of waterways such as the Rhine, Danube and Elbe, which have a lot to offer and she's quite right - why take a taxi when you can catch a boat?
If I've managed to persuade you of this idea and you're planning on booking your tickets, make sure you do so quickly as you may not get a flight. Apparently, an influx of visitors to the country is expected as the Christmas markets are opened.
Berlin is also good for budget shopping, the Post Office travel services recently revealed - quite a bit cheaper than Paris so you should save some pennies on those yuletide presents you're longing to buy.
