Better trains from Edinburgh to London
Some might say it's about time but the British government has taken it upon itself to improve services on a London to Scotland rail route after it is taken back into public ownership on Saturday. For anyone staying in either a London hostel or a hostel in Edinburgh, I imagine that this is cheering news. Now you can hotfoot it around the country in relative comfort, although this does depend on what the government means by 'improvements', I suppose. If it's just a bit of extra leg room, travellers can probably live without it.

That said, television channel Stv has reported that approximately £12 million is being sunk into making stations better along the East Coast Main Line once the handover between the Department for Transport and franchise holder National Express takes place so hopefully, one or two more Mars Bars will be seen in vending machines from now on.

I'm just joking with you - I'm sure the refurbishments will be to everyone's advantage, particularly as catering improvements on services are expected to be seen, as well as an abolition of reservation charges on the line.

Lord Adonis, Transport Secretary, was quoted by the news source as saying: "This is not a care and maintenance job. I want to see real improvements in the service and better value for money", so that's really quite promising for travellers such as you and I.

And if such savings are to be seen for those staying in Edinburgh hostels, that means more money freed up for fun activities, such as Edinburgh's St Andrew's Day celebrations that are taking place towards the end of November. If you make it to the event, check out the Ceilidh at the Hub and the presentation of the Pipes & Drums for an authentic Scottish experience.
