A ideal reason to book a cheap hostel in Venice could be to see Giorgia Boscolo, who has just been named the first ever female gondolier despite 900 years of the industry being male dominated.
The 24-year-old is now able to row tourists along the iconic city's narrow canals after becoming the first woman to pass the gondolier exam and gain a licence.
She told the Sunday Telegraph that she has always loved the vessels and preferred to punt with her father rather than go out with her friends.
"The guys joked with me that a woman would not be able to control a heavy and long gondola, but I told them that I had given birth to two children and that was far more difficult," she added.
Ms Boscolo declared her happiness and said she is delighted to have fulfilled a lifetime ambition.
The publication noted that although the banana-shaped boats have apparent on the waterways of the Italian city since 1094, a woman has never been at the helm of them.
In addition, the mayor of Venice Giorgio Orsoni is pleased with Ms Boscolo's achievement and predicts other females will follow suit and lead on from her example.
People who want to experience this type of transport may like to book a Venice hostel this summer, while fans of rowing might be particularly interested in the Regata Storica, which is taking place in the city on September 5th.
