Budapest Steeped in history culture and odd cartoons
A recent study by the Economist Intelligence Unit named it as the most 'liveable' city in eastern Europe and while that, of course, isn't much use to us backpackers in itself, surely it indicates that it must be a decent place to visit as well!
But if you're not convinced that a trip to Budapest is for you, perhaps the Hungarian National Tourist Office can persuade you.
It's just launched a new campaign using quirky cartoon characters to highlight everything the city has to offer. The emphasis is on the various aspects of culture that can be experienced, with budapestadventure.com playing host to the creations.
The characters themselves are a little odd for my liking - their heads are clearly too big for their bodies - but the message is a good one. It seems no matter what you're looking for, be it music festivals, the arts or even romance, it can be found in Budapest.
Next month will see the city host a Formula One Grand Prix, while the Budapest Summer Festival involves 100 musical performances taking place throughout August. The site also includes some tips and videos so travellers can get a sense of what they're in for before they arrive!
Part of the campaign also highlights a cheap travel option, so if you're planning to book in to hostels in the Hungarian capital, this summer could well be the time to do it.
