Castle lighthouse or prison take your pick
Far from being aimed solely at backpacking students, these establishments offer ways for people from all places and walks of life to mingle. Indeed, Canada Metro News recently observed that there are plenty of hostels that offer luxurious settings at low prices, rather than representing the ill-informed stereotype of being cramped and dirty.
And now Jacky Runice, writing for Examiner.com, has highlighted what she reckons to be some of the "coolest" hostels in the world.
Many of them are hostels in the USA, with a lighthouse in California one of the top picks. There's also an establishment in Tampa, Florida that offers something a little different - with Gram's Place housing rooms that are original railway sleeper cars.
For those heading to hostels in Europe, Carbisdale Castle Youth Hostel in Scotland is indeed a castle, with an art collection and Italian marble statues making it "one of the planet's most interesting hostels".
Finally, those who truly have a taste for the unusual may find what they are after in Canada, as Ms Runice noted: "The only hostel in North America located in a former prison, the Ottawa Jail Hostel is so realistic, you might not ever go two miles over the speed limit again."
