Take, for example, the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). Taking place from November 19th to 29th, it offers anyone staying in a hostel in Amsterdam the chance to check out a range of new work. The common themes at this year's event look set to be globalisation and the environment, so it certainly seems to be in touch with contemporary issues.
It doesn't look like the esteemed Mr Gore will be making an appearance, but the Green Screen category will include pieces such as Houston We Have a Problem, which is all about dependence on oil and the energy crisis, as well as renewable alternatives.
The festival kicks off with the world premiere of War Games and the Man Who Stopped Them - a film competing for the title of best feature-length documentary. It looks to be an intriguing tale of a Polish colonel who gave more 40,000 strategic documents about the Warsaw Pact to the CIA during the Cold War.
For those who prefer music to film, a trip to an Amsterdam hostel next week could include the Amsterdam Dance Event - a four-day celebration of the international electronic music scene beginning on October 21st.
