Do your homework and dont overspend
Whenever I'm planning a trip abroad there are a number of factors I like to take into account. Generally I like to visit somewhere new, so I check out potential destinations and look into things that I can see and do while there. Next on the list tends to be cheap travel, as I don't want to have to spend all my savings just to get there.

Then I like to think about where I'm going to stay, searching for the best hostels in terms of value as well as location and atmosphere.

But one thing I - and plenty of other people I'm sure - tend to neglect is thinking about the actual day-to-day costs once you arrive. Obviously we're aware that somewhere like New York or London is going to be more expensive than other places, but are you properly prepared to budget wherever you go?

Bob Atkinson, an expert at travelsupermarket.com, has highlighted the importance of being aware of your finances and what you are likely to need. "Before you go, you need to have an understanding of what the cost of living is and what you are going to have to spend when you are there. It will give you an idea of what to take with you," he said.

It comes after foreign exchange specialist Travelex recommended the use of its pre-paid card for those who are planning backpacker travel in particular, suggesting that it is much better than funding trips with expensive credit cards.
